Main Eco Compact 30kW Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Main Eco Compact 30kW a standard, combi or system boiler?

The Main Eco Compact 30kW is a gas combi boiler.

Combi boilers are excellent for providing hot water and heat for your radiators just when you need it. When you have a combi boiler installed in your home, you just turn on the tap and the hot water for your bath, shower, washing dishes and other activities is there when you need it. It also provides the heat you need to keep your radiators warm.

A combi boiler heats the cold water passing through it, which it draws from the mains. This newly heated water can then be distributed to whichever hot tap or radiator needs it.

In the past, boilers needed at least one storage tank to hold water that was either already heated or would be heated later. Sometimes, you'd have to wait for hot water because there was none left. In addition, storage tanks took up a lot of space and most UK homes are pretty small.

The main disadvantage to combi boilers is that they can only heat a certain amount of water at any one time, meaning the pressure, volume and temperature of water will decrease if more than one tap is on at the same time or if both the shower and washing machine are on together.

Is a Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler suitable for my house or apartment?

To determine that, we need to consider the size of the boiler. Size doesn't mean how big it is - it means how big its "output" is.

The output rate of a boiler tells you how much power it has available to it for heating the water that comes out of your taps and warms your radiators. A higher output rate means that your boiler has more power at its disposal.

You need to make sure you select a boiler with the right output rate. That's because, if your output rate is too high, then your boiler will have more power than it needs but it will cost too much to run. If the output rate is too low, your water may often not be hot enough.

The Main Eco Compact 30kW combi's output is 30 kW, so which types of property would this Main Eco Compact 30kW Combi boiler be appropriate for?

Most experienced heating engineers would suggest that the most suitable type of property for installing a Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler in would be medium-sized homes and larger apartments with 10-15 radiators and two bathrooms.

In addition to the output rate, you should consider a boiler's "flow rate" (measured in litres per minute) when choosing a combi boiler.

If you have a lot of radiators and bathrooms in your home and members of your household want to use hot water at the same time (like morning or evening showers and baths), you'll need a boiler with a high flow rate. This Main Eco Compact 30kW Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

However, it's not that simple. Combis can only draw water from the mains at the speed it's delivered. Homes with higher than average demand for hot water, and particularly those in low mains pressure areas, may find that a combi boiler is not the right answer for them.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead to better serve you and your family.

What dimensions does a Main Eco Compact 30kW have?

The dimensions of the Main Eco Compact 30kW are 700 mm [H] x 390 mm [W] x 285 mm [D].

Is the Main Eco Compact 30kW a condensing or non-condensing boiler?

This Main Eco Compact 30kW is a condensing gas boiler - we always recommend that clients choose the latest condensing models to benefit from the technology, which continues to improve year after year.

Condensing boilers capture the heat still present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation, processing them through a secondary heat exchanger to, among other tasks, heat colder water returning from your radiators.

By selecting a modern condensing boiler, you'll save money on your gas bills as well as benefitting the wider environment.

Is the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi environmentally friendly?

How we heat our homes and the damage we might be doing to the environment as a result has become an important point of concern to many homeowners worried about climate change.

In the UK, central heating is responsible for 14% of greenhouse gas production. Domestic gas boilers emit large quantities of nitrogen dioxide in British cities.

Is the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler an environmentally friendly choice for your home? Here’s what the figures say.

The energy efficiency rating for a boiler describes the amount of energy it uses and wastes during operation and there are two different ways to measure it.

All boilers manufactured and supplied in the UK must have a SEDBUK rating of “A” subject to a minimum energy efficiency score of 92% or above. Before April 2018, the minimum energy efficiency score was 88% (88/89% = "B" SEDBUK rating, 90%+ = "A" SEDBUK rating).

The Main Eco Compact 30kW scored an efficiency rating of 93% and a SEDBUK band rating of A.

The Energy Related Products (ERP) directive is Europe-wide legislation designed to reduce harmful gas emissions at all points of a product's life cycle - from the production process to its actual end use, right through to final disposal.

The Main Eco Compact 30kW has a rating of "A" for heat and "A" for water.

What warranty does the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler come with?

Main offers a parts and labour warranty of 5 years on the Main Eco Compact 30kW.

Main Eco Compact 30kW Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Main Eco Compact 30kW - a combi boiler, system boiler or regular boiler?

You might want to consider the Main Eco Compact 30kW for your house or flat if you are looking for a combi boiler.

One of the reasons the combi boiler was introduced to Britain in the 1970s was because residential properties are among the smallest in the world. More traditional boilers require one or more large tanks to be stored around the home to function.

A combi boiler is a self-contained unit that draws water from the mains then heats and distributes it instantly and on demand - no tanks are needed.

They are the most popular type of boilers in the UK and offer only one major disadvantage - there is a maximum volume of water that can be heated at any one time. If that limit is exceeded by, for example, two people using a hot water tap at the same time, there will be a drop in water pressure, temperature and volume to both taps.

Should I install a Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler in my house or apartment?

Whether this Main Eco Compact 30kW Combi boiler is right for where you live depends on its size or "output" level. Size does not mean its physical dimensions - it means how powerful it is.

A boiler’s output is a measurement of the amount of power it can use to provide hot water to your taps and radiators. The higher its output rate, the more water it can heat.

If your new boiler’s output is too low, your hot water might not be as hot as you want it to be. If it's too high, you’ll be paying more for gas than you need to.

The output of the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler is 30 kW, so which types of property would this be appropriate for?

An experienced heating engineer would recommend that the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler is a suitable choice for medium-sized homes and larger apartments with 10-15 radiators and two bathrooms.

You need to consider the flow rate as well as the output rate when choosing a combi boiler.

Flow rates, measured in litres per minute, indicate how much water your boiler can heat and distribute around your home at any given time. If your family regularly use hot water around the house at the same time and you have a lot of radiators, you should choose a boiler with a high flow rate. This Main Eco Compact 30kW Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

However, you also need to consider the flow rate of your local mains water supply. Combis can only draw water from the mains as fast as the pipes can deliver it. If you choose a boiler with a 14l/m flow rate and the mains pipes into your home have a flow rate of 12l/m, your boiler won't be able to operate at full capacity. In other words, try to make sure the local water pressure and your boiler flow rates are as close as possible.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Main Eco Compact 30kW - size in millimetres

The Main Eco Compact 30kW is 700 mm [H] by 390 mm [W] by 285 mm [D] in size.

Main Eco Compact 30kW – condensing or non-condensing?

Condensing gas boilers like the Main Eco Compact 30kW are more energy-efficient and choosing one for your home will cut the amount you pay every year for your gas.

They do this by capturing the heat in water vapour condensation and in exhaust gases which would normally be expelled via the flue. They then recycle that heat, returning it to the system to, among other tasks, reheat colder water that is returning to your boiler from your radiators.

Is the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi good for the environment?

How we heat our homes has become a major issue for many people worried about climate change and environmental issues in general.

Central heating creates 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gases. And in Britain's larger cities, gas boilers are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions.

If you would like your next boiler to help in the fight against climate change, would the Main Eco Compact 30kW combi be a suitable choice?

All boilers manufactured and supplied in the UK are assigned two energy efficiency ratings. By law, they must achieve a SEDBUK "A" rating subject to a minimum efficiency level of 92%. Prior to that, the minimum was 88% (88% and 89% are equivalent to a SEDBUK "B" grade and 90% and above an "A" grade).

The ratings awarded to the Main Eco Compact 30kW are 93% with a SEDBUK rating of "A".

In 2015, new legislation was introduced by the EU to encourage manufacturers to develop more energy-efficient products that emit fewer harmful gases throughout their lifetime.

The Energy Related Products Directive (ERP) applies to all products that consume energy, including during the manufacturing process, at the point of final disposal, and all points in between.

The ERP rating of the Main Eco Compact 30kW is "A" for heat and "A" for hot water.

Am I covered if my Main Eco Compact 30kW combi boiler breaks down?

Main’s Eco Compact 30kW boiler includes a parts and labour warranty of 5 years.
