Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only Oil boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 a system, regular or combi boiler?

The Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 is a heat only boiler you may wish to consider if you want this particular type of boiler for your house or flat.

If your home has more than one bathroom or you have a large family that uses a lot of hot water, a heat only boiler (sometimes called a regular boiler, a conventional boiler or a standard boiler) is likely to be the best option for you. Heat only boilers require both a hot water or immersion cylinder and a cold water tank. Once the water in the cylinder is heated, you can use this hot water throughout the day and it can feed multiple taps and showers at the same time.

This is in contrast to a combi boiler which can only heat a limited amount of water at any one time. This can cause a problem if two or more taps and showers are being used simultaneously as the temperature, pressure and volume to all points will drop.

Heat only boilers allow you to program the times that you wish heat and hot water to be available. However, if you forget to do this and the immersion cylinder is empty, you may have to wait up to an hour before hot water becomes available again.

If your property already has a water tank and cylinder, it will nearly always be cheaper to replace like for like and not choose a different type of boiler. In addition to new pipework, you may need to replace older radiators that may be unable to cope with the higher water pressure delivered by other types of boiler.

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler a suitable choice for my property?

It's best to choose a boiler whose size or "output" is right for your property. With a boiler, however, size does not mean how big the boiler is, it means how much power it has.

The amount of hot water you get from showers, bathrooms, and sinks and heat from your radiators depends on your boiler's output (measured in kilowatts). The higher the level of output, the better your home will be heated and you can be more certain that the water from your taps will be as hot as you want.

However, you must be careful. You might not get the hot water you want if your boiler output is too low. If it's too high, you'll be paying more than you need to for gas.

With the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only's output at 46 kW, which types of property would this Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler be most appropriate for?

An experienced PlumbProud Gas Safe engineer would recommend that the level of output from this Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler would make it a suitable installation option for larger properties including detached homes with 15 or more radiators and two or more bathrooms.

Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 dimensions

The Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 measures 908 mm high and 505 mm wide by a depth of 800 mm.

If you would like to reduce the space your boiler takes up in your home or you don't like the noise of an internal oil heater, you may want to consider the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 - an external heat only boiler which is fitted outside your property.

Supplied in sturdy weatherproof housing designed to resist rusting and water ingress, an external boiler is much easier for a service engineer to work on if there is a fault or it needs repairing. External boilers also reduce the risk of carbon monoxide leakages inside your home.

Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 – non-condensing or condensing?

We recommend that, if possible, you select one of the very latest condensing oil boilers on the market like the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46.

Condensing boilers are better for the environment because they capture and recycle the heat still present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation for re-use, meaning lower greenhouse gas emissions.

They're also a lot cheaper to run meaning that, if you're replacing a very old and inefficient boiler, the savings on your oil bill over 5-10 years add up to more than you pay for the boiler itself.

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only environmentally friendly?

With growing concern among the public about accelerating climate change, how we heat our homes and the impact this has on the environment has become a major topic of concern for many homeowners.

The power we need for our central heating systems accounts for around 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas production. There are often dangerous levels of ambient nitrogen dioxide gases in the atmospheres of British cities because of our use of gas boilers.

Will choosing to install a Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only in your home help the environment? Let's review the figures.

All boilers manufactured after April 2018 in the UK must be rated as an “A” on the SEDBUK grading system, subject to a minimum energy efficiency rating of 92% or above. Before that, the minimum rate was 88% - boilers with an energy efficiency of 88% or 89% were given a “B” rating. Boilers scoring 90% or more were given an "A" rating.

The energy efficiency rating for a boiler describes the amount of energy it uses and how much goes to waste in operation.

The Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 has an efficiency rating of 90% with a SEDBUK grade of "A".

Energy-efficient boilers help the environment as they require less fuel and emit fewer harmful gases. In 2015, the EU introduced the Energy Related Products Directive (ERP) with the aim of ensuring that all manufacturers, including boiler manufacturers, developed more efficient products and processes.

This legislation aims to conserve energy at all life cycle stages, from initial production through to actual use by a customer and up to the point of disposal.

The Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 has been given an ERP rating of "A".

How long is the warranty offered by the manufacturer for the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 boiler?

The parts and labour warranty on the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 lasts for 2 years.

Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only Oil boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 boiler a combi, regular or a system boiler?

Grant’s Vortex Pro 36/46 is one you might consider if you’re looking for a heat only boiler for your house or flat.

Heat only boilers are also referred to as regular boilers, conventional boilers or standard boilers. Heat only boilers require both a hot water/immersion cylinder (usually stored in a landing cupboard or airing cupboard) and a cold water tank (usually stored in a loft) to work. Water passes from the cold tank to the immersion cylinder and the immersion cylinder heats and keeps water warm.

You program your immersion cylinder via the control panel to make sure that you have the hot water and central heating you need. However, if you forget to set your system and there's no water left in the immersion cylinder, it can take up to an hour before you'll have hot water again.

If your home has more than one bathroom or you have a large family and there's a high demand for hot water, a heat only boiler is often a more suitable option than a combi boiler. Although combis offer space-saving advantages, there is a maximum volume of water they can heat at any given time. This means that, if two or more people in your household want hot water at the same time, there will likely be a drop in temperature, volume and pressure to both points.

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler from the Vortex Pro range a suitable choice for my house or flat?

You should make sure that the boiler you install in your property is the right "size". And, by size, we don't mean how big it is, we mean how powerful it is - the "output".

Your boiler has to be powerful enough to heat all the hot water you need for your radiators and taps. Power is measured in kilowatts and the more kilowatts a boiler has available to it, the more water it can heat.

If the output (measured in kilowatts) is too high, you'll have all the power you need and more but your oil bills will be much higher. If it's too low, you'll often find that the water coming out of your taps and fed into your radiators is only lukewarm.

With the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only's output at 46 kW, which types of property would this Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler be most appropriate for?

An experienced PlumbProud Gas Safe boiler installer would almost certainly recommend that this Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler would be most suitable for larger properties including detached homes with 15 or more radiators and two or more bathrooms.

What size is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 boiler?

The Grant Vortex Pro 36/46's dimensions are 908 mm [H] x 505 mm [W] x 800 mm [D].

External floor-standing heat only boilers like the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 don't take up space in the home (they're fitted outside) and it's almost impossible to hear them when in operation (unlike internal boilers). They're much easier for a service technician to access if something goes wrong and there's less chance of carbon monoxide leaking into your home.

This Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler features weatherproof housing meaning a minimal risk of rusting and water ingress. In addition, as the boiler is outside your home, there is a lower chance of oil leaking into your property, which can cause damage and difficult-to-remove odours.

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 condensing or non-condensing?

Condensing boilers like the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 improve energy efficiency and reduce your annual expenditure on oil.

They do this by capturing and recycling the warmth still present in water vapour condensation and flue exhaust gases to, for example, increase the temperature of the colder water returning from your radiators.

Condensing boilers are also much better for the environment because they emit fewer greenhouse gases.

Is the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only a good choice for the environment?

How we heat our homes has become a pressing issue of concern for many homeowners worried about climate change and the environmental impact of their personal choices.

As much as 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas production derives from our domestic central heating systems. Gas boilers are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions in Britain's largest cities.

Will installing a Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only in your home be a positive contribution to the environment? The figures below will tell you more.

By law, boilers manufactured and supplied in the UK must achieve a SEDBUK rating of "A" and work at a 92% minimum efficiency. Before April 2018, a minimum of 88% energy efficiency needed to be achieved (88/89% = SEDBUK "B" and 90% = SEDBUK "A").

Following official testing, the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 was given an efficiency rating of 90% with a SEDBUK rating of "A".

Energy efficiency is a measure of how much energy is used and how much is wasted when a boiler is operating.

The ERP (or Energy Related Products Directive) is European legislation which applies to all products that consume energy throughout their lifetime.

Its purpose is to encourage manufacturers to offer products that are kinder to the environment by reducing harmful gas emissions at all stages, from production and end use right through to disposal.

The ERP rating for the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 is "A".

Does the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46 heat only boiler come with a warranty?

On the Grant Vortex Pro 36/46, the manufacturer offers a parts and labour warranty of 2 years.
