Firebird Envirogreen 20 Combi Oil boiler frequently asked questions

Firebird Envirogreen 20 - combi, system or regular boiler?

If you’re looking for a combi boiler for your house or flat, you may wish to the consider the Firebird Envirogreen 20.

In older British homes, traditional boilers required you to find room for one or more storage tanks. One tank would keep hot water warm and the other stored cold water for later heating. Manufacturers introduced combi boilers to the UK in the 1970s so that homeowners could get the warmth and hot water they needed without having to sacrifice too much valuable space – remember that residential property in this country is among the smallest in the Western world.

Combi boilers deliver hot water to your radiators and taps using water they draw directly from the mains supply. As mains water travels through a combi boiler, the technology within it heats the cold water instantly and on demand. The hot water is then distributed throughout your house.

Combi boilers have one drawback, however: they can only heat a certain amount of water within a given time. For example, if someone uses the shower and another person uses the hot water tap at the same time, water pressure drops because water reaches each point differently.

Is a Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi boiler right for my house or apartment?

To determine that, we need to consider the size of the boiler. Size doesn't mean how big it is - it means how big its "output" is.

The output rate of a boiler tells you how much power it has available to it for heating the water that comes out of your taps and warms your radiators. A higher output rate means that your boiler has more power at its disposal.

You need to make sure you select a boiler with the right output rate. That's because, if your output rate is too high, then your boiler will have more power than it needs but it will cost too much to run. If the output rate is too low, your water may often not be hot enough.

The Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi's output is 20 kW, so which types of property would this Firebird Envirogreen 20 Combi boiler be appropriate for?

A PlumbProud heating engineer would recommend that this Firebird Envirogreen 20 Combi boiler is suitable for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

You also need to choose a combi boiler with the right flow rate for where you live.

A combi boiler's flow rate is the maximum volume of water (measured in litres per minute) that it can heat and distribute to your radiators, taps and showers at the same time. This Firebird Envirogreen 20 Combi boiler's flow rate is 16 L/m.

However, combi boilers like the Firebird Envirogreen 20 draw water directly from the mains and heat it instantly.

If your mains pressure is 12 litres per minute, your boiler can only heat and distribute hot water at a rate of 12 litres per minute even if it has a higher flow rate.

Combi boilers also struggle when multiple people in your home want to use hot water at the same time - for example, someone running the hot water tap in the kitchen and two people wanting to shower in separate bathrooms.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

How large is the Firebird Envirogreen 20?

The measurements of the Firebird Envirogreen 20 are 845 mm by 595 mm by 614 mm.

Over the last 20 years, compact wall-hung boilers have been installed in far greater numbers in UK properties than floor-standing boilers like the Firebird Envirogreen 20. While hundreds of thousands of properties still have floor-standing boilers, many homeowners consider making the switch to wall-hung boilers to increase the amount of living space that they and their families can enjoy. We can swap your old floor-standing boiler for a wall-mounted boiler but please bear in mind that there may be an additional cost for your installation if we have to replace the pipework.

You should though be able to recoup this investment in full in just a few years with the savings you make on your oil bills.

If you are considering the Firebird Envirogreen 20 as a replacement for your existing heat only or system boiler, you'll also have to budget for the removal of your hot water cylinder and/or your expansion tank.

If you would like professional information and guidance on the best choices for your home, please contact PlumbProud for advice.

Is the Firebird Envirogreen 20 a condensing or non-condensing boiler?

We recommend that, if possible, you select one of the very latest condensing oil boilers on the market like the Firebird Envirogreen 20.

Condensing boilers are better for the environment because they capture and recycle the heat still present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation for re-use, meaning lower greenhouse gas emissions.

They're also a lot cheaper to run meaning that, if you're replacing a very old and inefficient boiler, the savings on your oil bill over 5-10 years add up to more than you pay for the boiler itself.

Is the Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi rated as environmentally friendly?

How we heat our homes has become a pressing issue of concern for many homeowners worried about climate change and the environmental impact of their personal choices.

With central heating being responsible for 14% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, your choice of boiler matters. Gas boilers are also responsible for the significant atmospheric volumes of dangerous nitrogen dioxide emissions in larger British cities.

Will choosing to install a Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi in your home help the environment? Let's review the figures.

All new British boilers must perform to a legal minimum energy efficiency of 92% (a low to good SEDBUK "A" rating). Prior to April 2018, the target was 88% (86-90% = SEDBUK "B" and 90%+ = SEDBUK "A").

Efficiency ratings are intended to let consumers know how much energy a boiler uses in its day-to-day activities and how much energy goes to waste.

The Firebird Envirogreen 20 was awarded an efficiency rating of 93%, equivalent to a SEDBUK grade of "A".

The ERP (Energy Related Products Directive) applies to all products that consume energy at any time in their lifetime, from manufacture to disposal and all points in between.

This European legislation intends to encourage manufacturers to offer end users products that are better for the environment through the creation of fewer harmful gas emissions at all points of a product's life cycle.

The ERP rating for the Firebird Envirogreen 20 is "A" for heat and "A" for water.

How many years' warranty does the Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi come with?

The parts and labour warranty on the Firebird Envirogreen 20 lasts for 2 years.

Firebird Envirogreen 20 Combi Oil boiler frequently asked questions

Is this Firebird Envirogreen 20 boiler a combi, system or regular boiler?

The Firebird Envirogreen 20 is a oil combi boiler.

Combi boilers provide hot water or heating for your home on demand. You just need to turn the tap to get hot water or switch on the radiator and you’ll feel your home warm up within minutes.

In contrast, traditional boilers required either one or two large storage tanks to work - one to heat and keep water warm and the other to hold cold water for later heating. If the immersion tank was empty, it wasn’t uncommon to wait up to an hour for enough hot water to fill a bath, for example.

Combi boilers draw cold water from the mains and then heat it instantly whenever it's needed, all from one small unit.

The one disadvantage to combi boilers is that, if more than one point is in use at any one time (for example, if someone is taking a shower and another person turns on a hot water tap elsewhere in the property), water pressure, temperature and volume drop to both points.

Is a Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi the right boiler for my house or flat?

Selecting the right boiler for your property means selecting a boiler that is the right size. And, by size, we don't mean how big it is, we mean how powerful it is - the "output".

The output of a boiler is measured in kilowatts. The output level determines the maximum power a boiler can use in heating the water needed for the baths, showers, taps and radiators in your home.

It's important to choose a boiler with an appropriate level of output for your property. Your boiler should be able to cope with periods of peak demand in your property and not just your average usage.

An output rate that is too low will result in an inadequate supply of hot water, while an output that is too high will mean the boiler will cost more to run than is necessary.

The output of the Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi is 20 kW kilowatts, so which types of property would this be appropriate for?

Most boiler engineers would recommend that a boiler with this output level would be most suitable for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

With combi boilers, flow rates are as important a consideration as output rates.

All combi boilers draw water from the mains. They then heat this water instantly whenever it's needed and distribute it to your radiators and taps.

A boiler's "flow rate" describes how much water a boiler can draw from the mains at any one time, which it then heats and sends around your home (measured in litres per minute). This Firebird Envirogreen 20 Combi boiler's flow rate is 16 L/m.

If your home has a large number of radiators, a lot of bathrooms, or multiple people who wish to use the hot water at the same time, your combi boiler may not be able to draw as much water from the mains as it needs to serve everyone, regardless of how high the flow rate is.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Making space for the Firebird Envirogreen 20

The Firebird Envirogreen 20 is 845 mm high by 595 mm wide by 614 mm deep.

There are still hundreds of thousands of floor-standing boilers like the Firebird Envirogreen 20 throughout the UK even though compact, wall-mounted boilers have become the preferred choice for most homeowners in the last 20 years who want more space to live. It is still possible to replace your existing floor-standing boiler with a wall-mounted unit if you want but please keep in mind that the pipework might need to be replaced in addition to the boiler and installation.

You will eventually recover that investment with savings on your oil bills but this will take some time.

You will also need to remove your hot water cylinder and/or expansion tank if you replace your current heat only or system boiler with the Firebird Envirogreen 20.

Please get in touch with PlumbProud for information and advice on how to proceed and we'll provide you with our recommendations.

Is the Firebird Envirogreen 20 a condensing or non-condensing boiler?

We recommend the Firebird Envirogreen 20 as it is a modern condensing oil boiler from a trusted manufacturer with a reputation for supplying highly energy-efficient boilers.

Condensing boilers capture the heat still present in water vapour condensation and flue exhaust gases and recycle it back into the heating system. With this extra energy, your boiler can, among other tasks, reheat colder water coming back from your radiators without having to burn more oil.

Condensing boilers significantly reduce your quarterly oil costs and they're better for the environment.

Is the Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi an environmentally friendly boiler?

As more of us are increasingly concerned about climate change, how we heat our homes and its impact on the environment has become an issue of importance to homeowners.

Central heating accounts for 14% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. In larger British cities, gas boilers emit dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide into the atmosphere.

Would installing the Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi in your home be an environmentally friendly decision? Let's look closely at the figures.

All boilers manufactured in the UK from April 2018 must achieve a SEDBUK “A” grade and an energy efficiency rating of 92% or above. Before that, the minimum was 88% - efficiency ratings of 88% and 89% were scored a “B” and 90%+ an "A".

A boiler's energy efficiency rating describes how much energy it uses and wastes during its standard operation.

The energy efficiency of the Firebird Envirogreen 20 was rated at 93% with a SEDBUK grading of "A".

Energy-efficient boilers help the environment as they require less fuel and emit fewer harmful gases. In 2015, the EU introduced the Energy Related Products Directive (ERP), the aim of which was to ensure that all manufacturers, including boiler manufacturers, developed more efficient products and processes.

The legislation aims to conserve energy at all life cycle stages from initial production to actual use by the customer, through to the point of disposal.

The Firebird Envirogreen 20 has been given an ERP rating of "A" for heat and "A" for water.

Am I covered if my Firebird Envirogreen 20 combi boiler breaks down?

You receive a parts and labour warranty of 2 years with the Firebird Envirogreen 20 boiler.
