Baxi Platinum 24 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 a combi, system or regular boiler?

If you are searching for a combi boiler for your house or flat, the Baxi Platinum 24 is certainly one to consider.

In many properties, combi boilers are more suitable than traditional types of boiler. Combi boilers heat water instantly on demand, which they draw directly from the mains supply, removing the need for storage tanks that can take up valuable space in your home.

A combi boiler is often the right choice for a smaller property, particularly if your home doesn't have a useable loft. As water is heated and delivered immediately rather than being kept warm for hours in an immersion tank, combi boilers reduce gas usage, thereby minimising your heating costs.

The main disadvantage of combi boilers is that they can only heat a certain amount of water at any one time. This means that, if two people are using different taps or showers within your home at the same time, the flow of heated water to each will be reduced, as will the water pressure and temperature.

Should I install a Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler in my house or apartment?

It's best to choose a boiler whose size or "output" is right for your property. With boilers, however, size does not mean how big a boiler is, it means how much power it has.

A boiler’s output indicates the amount of power it can use when heating the water which it then sends to your taps and radiators. The higher the output rate, the more water it can heat.

If a boiler’s output is too low, there will be times when your hot water might not be as hot as you want it to be. If it is too high, you’ll likely be paying more than you need to for your gas.

Measured in kilowatts, the Baxi Platinum 24 combi's output level is 24 kW, so which types of property would this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler be an appropriate choice for?

Most experienced boiler engineers would recommend this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler as a suitable option for smaller homes and apartments with no more than up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

When choosing a combi boiler for your home, you need to think about "flow rates" as well as output rates. This Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler's flow rate is 10 L/m.

This indicates the maximum volume of hot water (measured in litres per minute) that your boiler can heat then distribute to your taps, showers and radiators at any one time. The greater the demand for hot water in your home, the higher the flow rate you will require.

However, all combi boilers like the Baxi Platinum 24 draw water directly from the mains and heat it instantly.

This means that they can only heat and distribute water at the rate it enters the property (the "mains pressure" rate). For example, if your mains pressure is 11 litres per minute, this will be the highest flow rate you can achieve even if your boiler's flow rate is 17l/m.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

What size is a Baxi Platinum 24 boiler?

Baxi’s Platinum 24 is 780 mm tall, 450 mm wide, and 345 mm deep.

Baxi Platinum 24 – condensing or non-condensing?

Condensing boilers convert the warmth present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation into heat which they then recycle to increase the temperature of the colder water returning to your system.

We recommend that homeowners choose a condensing boiler like the Baxi Platinum 24 for this reason - the more recent your model the better because the technology improves every year.

You'll benefit from lower quarterly gas bills and condensing boilers are also much more environmentally friendly.

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler good for the environment?

Environmentally-friendly heating has become an important issue for homeowners concerned about the accelerating pace of climate change.

Nitrogen dioxide emissions in Britain's largest cities are at dangerous levels and this has been caused by gas boilers. In fact, 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gases are produced by central heating.

Will choosing to install a Baxi Platinum 24 combi in your home help the environment? Let's review the figures.

By law, boilers manufactured and supplied in the UK must achieve a SEDBUK rating of "A" and work at a 92% minimum efficiency. Before April 2018, a minimum of 88% energy efficiency needed to be achieved (88/89% = SEDBUK "B" and 90% = SEDBUK "A").

Following official testing, the Baxi Platinum 24 was given an efficiency rating of 92% with a SEDBUK rating of "A".

Energy efficiency is a measure of how much energy is used and how much is wasted when a boiler is operating.

The Energy Related Products Directive, also known as ERP, is European legislation that intends to reduce energy consumption related to products right from the initial manufacturing process through to eventual final disposal.

The purpose of the directive is to encourage manufacturers to create new products that are kinder to the environment and which result in lower overall harmful gas emissions through a product's entire life cycle.

The Baxi Platinum 24 has a rating of "A" for heat and "A" for water.

What is the warranty period on a Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler?

The Baxi Platinum 24 boiler comes with a parts and labour warranty of 10 years.

Baxi Platinum 24 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 a standard, combi or system boiler?

The Baxi Platinum 24 is worthy of consideration if you're looking for a combi boiler for your flat or house.

Traditional boilers have one or more large tanks in which they store either heated water or water to be heated later. Manufacturers originally introduced combi boilers to the market in the 1970s to enable homeowners to save space - UK residential properties are among the smallest in the Western world.

Combi boilers don't need these tanks because they draw water directly from the mains and instantly heat it on demand thanks to the technology inside the boiler. Combi boilers then distribute this hot water to your home’s taps and radiators when needed.

The most significant disadvantage of combi boilers is that they are not ideal in larger homes where multiple people might want hot water at the same time – for example, if someone is having a shower while another wants to wash dishes in the kitchen. This is because combi boilers have a maximum volume of water that they can heat. When two people want hot water at the same time, the water temperature, pressure and volume delivered to both points drop.

Should I choose a Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler for my house or flat?

Whether this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler is right for your property depends on its size or what its "output" level is. Size does not mean its physical dimensions, however - it means how powerful it is.

The output rating indicates how much energy a boiler can use in providing you with hot water and heat when you need it from your radiators and taps. The greater the output, the more water it can heat.

It's better to take advice on this from a registered installer because, if your boiler output is too low, your water and radiators might not get as hot as you would like them to be. However, if the output level is too high, you'll end up paying more on your gas bills than you need to.

Which types of property would this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler be appropriate for given its output of 24 kW?

Most experienced boiler engineers would recommend this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler as a suitable option for smaller homes and apartments with no more than up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

With all combi boilers, the "flow rate" (measured in litres per minute) is as important a consideration as output rate when choosing which model to go for. This Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler's flow rate is 10 L/m.

Like all combi boilers, the Baxi Platinum 24 draws water from the mains. It instantly heats that water and then distributes it to the parts of your home which need it - taps, radiators, bathrooms, and so on.

However, the water in the mains pipe that feeds your boilers has its own flow rate - normally between 10 and 12l/m. So if you choose a combi with a flow rate of 14l/m but local water pressure is equivalent to 11l/m, your boiler will actually operate at 11l/m - below its capacity.

In addition, if different family members want hot water at the same time (like for regular morning and evening showers) and your boiler has to provide hot water to your radiators at the same time, a combi boiler may not be suitable.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Baxi Platinum 24 size

The size of the Baxi Platinum 24 boiler is 780 mm high, 450 mm wide, and 345 mm deep.

Platinum 24 – condensing or non-condensing?

Condensing boilers like the Baxi Platinum 24 improve energy efficiency and reduce your annual expenditure on gas.

They do this by capturing and recycling the warmth still present in water vapour condensation and flue exhaust gases to, for example, increase the temperature of the colder water returning from your radiators.

Condensing boilers are also much better for the environment because they emit fewer greenhouse gases.

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 combi an environmentally friendly boiler?

With growing concern among the public about accelerating climate change, how we heat our homes and the impact this has on the environment has become a major topic of concern for many homeowners.

In the UK, central heating is responsible for 14% of greenhouse gas production. Domestic gas boilers emit large quantities of nitrogen dioxide in British cities.

Will installing a Baxi Platinum 24 combi in your home be a positive contribution to the environment? The figures below will tell you more.

All new British boilers must perform to a legal minimum energy efficiency of 92% (a low to good SEDBUK "A" rating). Prior to April 2018, the target was 88% (86-90% = SEDBUK "B" and 90%+ = SEDBUK "A").

Efficiency ratings are intended to let consumers know how much energy a boiler uses in its day-to-day activities and how much energy goes to waste.

The Baxi Platinum 24 was awarded an efficiency rating of 92%, equivalent to a SEDBUK grade of "A".

The Energy Related Products Directive (ERP) came into force in 2015. This legislation was introduced to encourage manufacturers to create more energy-efficient products and it covers all products that consume energy during their lifetimes, including energy used during production and at the point of disposal.

ERP ratings of "A" for heat and "A" for water were assigned when testing the Baxi Platinum 24.

Will I be covered if the Baxi Platinum 24 combi breaks down?

Parts and labour charges incurred during a repair on the Baxi Baxi Platinum 24 boiler are covered by a 10 year warranty.
