Baxi Platinum 24 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 boiler a combi, system or regular boiler?

You might want to consider the Baxi Platinum 24 for your house or flat if you are looking for a combi boiler.

In the past, most boilers needed one or more storage tanks to operate - one to store warm water and the other for storing water to be heated later. But storage tanks are problematic in properties where space is at a premium and particularly where there is no loft. Many properties in the UK are small and so manufacturers introduced combi boilers in the 1970s to eliminate the need for tanks.

With a combi boiler, the hot water for your radiators and taps is delivered on demand. The boiler instantly heats water it draws directly from the mains internally. It then distributes the heated water around your home at mains pressure as you need it.

It is important to bear in mind that, while combi boilers have many benefits, they can only heat a certain volume of water at any given time. This means that, if you run a shower at the same time as someone else is doing the washing up in the kitchen, the volume of water passing to each point will drop, causing a fall in pressure.

Would the Baxi Platinum 24 combi be a suitable boiler for my house or flat?

To determine that, we need to consider the size of the boiler. Size doesn't mean how big it is - it means how big its "output" is.

Your boiler's output indicates the maximum amount of power available to it to heat the water you need to warm your radiators or when you want hot water from your taps. A higher output rate means that your boiler is capable of heating greater volumes of water.

If a boiler's output rate is too low, you'll often find that the water is not as hot as you want it to be. Too high, however, and you'll end up paying more for your gas than you should be.

The Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler has an output rate of 24 kW, so which types of property would this be suitable for?

Most boiler engineers would recommend that a boiler with this output level would be most suitable for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

With all combi boilers, you need to consider the "flow rate" as well as the output rate when making your decision.

Like all combi boilers, the Baxi Platinum 24 draws water from the mains. It instantly heats that water and then distributes it to the parts of your home which need it - taps, radiators, bathrooms, and so on. This Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler's flow rate is 10 L/m.

There is no benefit to purchasing a boiler with a high flow rate if the local water pressure is not that good - a high flow rate doesn't mean that your combi can draw more water from the mains.

In addition, if you live in a home with a large number of radiators and more than one bathroom and if more than one person regularly wants to use hot water at a time, a combi boiler may struggle to provide enough water at a hot enough temperature.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Dimensions of the Baxi Platinum 24 boiler

The Baxi Platinum 24 is 780 mm in height, 450 mm in width and 345 mm in depth.

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 condensing or non-condensing?

The Baxi Platinum 24 is a condensing gas boiler - we’d strongly recommend that you choose the very latest condensing model for your home.

Condensing boilers run on either gas or oil and are manufactured specifically to improve energy efficiency. They do this by capturing and recycling the warmth present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation into more usable heat the system can use, meaning they're far more efficient and cost less to run.

How energy efficient is the Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler?

How we heat our homes and the effect that has on climate change has become important to many homeowners worried about the environment.

Central heating creates 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gases. And in Britain's larger cities, gas boilers are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Will you be helping the environment if you decide to install a Baxi Platinum 24 combi in your home? Let’s look at the figures.

The Baxi Platinum 24 has been awarded an efficiency rating of 92% and a SEDBUK band rating of "A".

In the UK, all boilers manufactured and supplied must have an energy efficiency rating of at least 92% or a SEDBUK "A" grade. Until April 2018, the minimum rating was 88% (88% and 89% are equivalent to a SEDBUK "B" rating and anything higher is rated "A").

A boiler's energy efficiency rating describes the amount of energy it uses and wastes when in normal operation.

The Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive is a European directive which applies to all products that consume energy over their lifetime.

It encourages companies to create products that are environmentally friendlier at all life cycle stages, including initial manufacturing and end use through to final disposal, with the aim of reducing harmful gas emissions.

The Baxi Platinum 24 is rated "A" for heat and "A" for water.

What warranty does the Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler come with?

The manufacturer offers a parts and labour warranty of 10 years on the Baxi Platinum 24 boiler to new customers.

Baxi Platinum 24 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Baxi Platinum 24 - combi, system or regular boiler?

If you’re looking for a combi boiler for your house or flat, you may wish to the consider the Baxi Platinum 24.

Combi boilers provide hot water or heating for your home on demand. You just need to turn the tap to get hot water or switch on the radiator and you’ll feel your home warm up within minutes.

In contrast, traditional boilers required either one or two large storage tanks to work - one to heat and keep water warm and the other to hold cold water for later heating. If the immersion tank was empty, it wasn’t uncommon to wait up to an hour for enough hot water to fill a bath, for example.

Combi boilers draw cold water from the mains and then heat it instantly whenever it's needed, all from one small unit.

The one disadvantage to combi boilers is that, if more than one point is in use at any one time (for example, if someone is taking a shower and another person turns on a hot water tap elsewhere in the property), water pressure, temperature and volume drop to both points.

Is a Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler suitable for my house or flat?

Whether this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler is right for where you live depends on its size or "output" level. Size does not mean its physical dimensions - it means how powerful it is.

The output level of a boiler tells you how much power it has to heat the water coming from your taps and warming up your radiators. The higher the output level, the greater the volume of water it can heat up.

If the output (measured in kilowatts) is too high, you'll pay higher gas bills and your water will be piping hot. Too low and the water coming out of your taps and being fed into your radiators will often be lukewarm.

The Baxi Platinum 24 combi outputs at a maximum of 24 kW, so which types of property would this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler be appropriate for?

Most Gas Safe engineers would suggest that the most suitable type of property for installing a Baxi Platinum 24 combi boiler would be smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

With combi boilers like the Baxi Platinum 24, you need to take the flow rate into account as well as the output rate.

Combi boilers draw water from the mains and then instantly heat that water and send it to wherever in your home it's needed. Flow rates, measured in litres per minute, are subject to the mains water pressure in your area. So, for example, if the local mains water pressure is 11 litres per minute and the flow rate of your boiler is 14 litres per minute, the boiler will not be able to process more than 11 litres per minute. The flow rate of this Baxi Platinum 24 Combi boiler is 10 L/m.

If you live in a home with lots of radiators or bathrooms where many people want to use hot water at the same time, a combi boiler may not be able to cope. For reference, a power shower uses about 10 litres of water per minute. If two people want showers at the same time or one person wants a shower and the other hot water from a tap in the kitchen, your boiler may not have a large enough flow rate even if the local mains water pressure is high.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

How large is the Baxi Platinum 24?

The measurements of the Baxi Platinum 24 are 780 mm by 450 mm by 345 mm.

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 condensing or non-condensing?

We recommend that you choose a condensing boiler wherever possible like the Baxi Platinum 24 - try to go for the latest model, if possible, to take advantage of improving technology.

Condensing boilers capture and recycle the warmth still present in the water vapour condensation and in flue exhaust emissions created by burning gas to make them more efficient and economical to run.

You will save money on your gas bills too, plus condensing boilers are friendlier to the environment.

Is the Baxi Platinum 24 combi environmentally friendly?

How we heat our homes has become a pressing issue of concern for many homeowners worried about climate change and the environmental impact of their personal choices.

Nitrogen dioxide emissions in Britain's largest cities are at dangerous levels and this has been caused by gas boilers. In fact, 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gases are produced by central heating.

Do the figures suggest that installing the Baxi Platinum 24 combi at your property would help in the fight against climate change?

Boilers manufactured after April 2018 in the UK must achieve an "A" on the SEDBUK grading system as well as score a minimum of 92% on a separate energy efficiency test. Prior to that, the minimum was 88% - boilers rated at 88% and 89% were given a “B” rating (90% and higher were given an "A").

An energy efficiency rating describes how much energy the boiler uses and how much it wastes when in use.

The Baxi Platinum 24 was awarded an efficiency rating of 92% with a SEDBUK grading of "A".

The Energy Related Products Directive grades products according to the energy they consume and the harmful gas emissions they create, from manufacturing right through to final disposal, including how they're used by customers between these two points.

The Baxi Platinum 24 is rated "A" for heat and "A" for water.

What warranty do I get if I purchase the Baxi Platinum 24 boiler?

The Baxi Platinum 24 is covered by a parts and labour warranty of 10 years following installation.
