Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Baxi Duo-tec 40 boiler a combi, system or regular boiler?

When looking for a combi boiler for your house or flat, the Baxi Duo-tec 40 might be a suitable option for you.

In older British homes, traditional boilers required you to find room for one or more storage tanks. One tank would keep hot water warm and the other stored cold water for later heating. Manufacturers introduced combi boilers to the UK in the 1970s so that homeowners could get the warmth and hot water they needed without having to sacrifice too much valuable space – remember that residential property in this country is among the smallest in the Western world.

Combi boilers deliver hot water to your radiators and taps using water they draw directly from the mains supply. As mains water travels through a combi boiler, the technology within it heats the cold water instantly and on demand. The hot water is then distributed throughout your house.

Combi boilers have one drawback, however: they can only heat a certain amount of water within a given time. For example, if someone uses the shower and another person uses the hot water tap at the same time, water pressure drops because water reaches each point differently.

Is the Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi boiler a suitable option for my house or flat?

To determine that, we need to consider the size of the boiler. Size doesn't mean how big the boiler is - it means how big its "output" is.

This Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi boiler gets its power from gas and the power it's capable of producing is measured in kilowatts - the output rate is actually a kilowatt rate. The higher the output rate, the more kilowatts a boiler can use when heating water.

If you choose a boiler whose output rate is too low, it may not have enough power to make your water as hot as you would like. If you choose a boiler whose output rate is too high, you won't have to put up with lukewarm water but you will face higher gas bills.

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi boiler has an output level of 40 kW, so which types of property would it be appropriate for?

Most Gas Safe boiler installers would suggest that the most suitable type of property for installing this Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi boiler in would be larger properties including detached homes with 15 or more radiators and two or more bathrooms.

With all combi boilers, you need to consider the "flow rate" as well as the output rate when making your decision.

Like all combi boilers, the Baxi Duo-tec 40 draws water from the mains. It instantly heats that water and then distributes it to the parts of your home which need it - taps, radiators, bathrooms, and so on. This Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi boiler's flow rate is 16 L/m.

There is no benefit to purchasing a boiler with a high flow rate if the local water pressure is not that good - a high flow rate doesn't mean that your combi can draw more water from the mains.

In addition, if you live in a home with a large number of radiators and more than one bathroom and if more than one person regularly wants to use hot water at a time, a combi boiler may struggle to provide enough water at a hot enough temperature.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

What are the dimensions of the Baxi Duo-tec 40 boiler?

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 occupies a space of 780 mm high by 450 mm wide and 345 mm deep.

Duo-tec 40 – non-condensing or condensing?

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 is a condensing gas boiler - in fact, we recommend that you select this model or one of the latest condensing boilers on the market as the technology continues to improve over time.

Condensing boilers capture the heat still present in the flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation created when the gas is burned and they recycle this back into the heating system to warm up the cold water re-entering the boiler from your radiators.

They're much more environmentally friendly and installing one results in much lower annual gas bills.

Is the Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi environmentally friendly?

Many homeowners are becoming increasingly concerned about how they heat their homes and the impact it has on climate change and other important environmental issues.

14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas production comes from central heating. In the bigger cities, gas boilers in particular are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Will choosing to install a Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi in your home help the environment? Let's review the figures.

Under current UK law, all boilers must achieve a minimum energy efficiency level of 92% (a low to good SEDBUK "A" rating). The minimum level was raised from its previous 88% in April 2018.

Energy efficiency scores are intended to inform consumers of the amount of energy used and wasted when a boiler is in normal operation.

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 was awarded an efficiency rating of 92% with a SEDBUK band rating of "A".

The ERP (Energy Related Products Directive) applies to all products that consume energy at any time in their lifetime, from manufacture to disposal and all points in between.

This European legislation intends to encourage manufacturers to offer end users products that are better for the environment through the creation of fewer harmful gas emissions at all points of a product's life cycle.

The ERP rating for the Baxi Duo-tec 40 is "A" for heat and "A" for water.

Am I covered if my Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi boiler breaks down?

Baxi’s Duo-tec 40 boiler includes a parts and labour warranty of 7 years.

Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Baxi Duo-tec 40 - a system boiler, regular boiler or combi boiler?

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 is a gas combi boiler.

One of the reasons the combi boiler was introduced to Britain in the 1970s was because residential properties are among the smallest in the world. More traditional boilers require one or more large tanks to be stored around the home to function.

A combi boiler is a self-contained unit that draws water from the mains then heats and distributes it instantly and on demand - no tanks are needed.

They are the most popular type of boilers in the UK and offer only one major disadvantage - there is a maximum volume of water that can be heated at any one time. If that limit is exceeded by, for example, two people using a hot water tap at the same time, there will be a drop in water pressure, temperature and volume to both taps.

Is a Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi boiler suitable for my house or flat?

It's best to choose a boiler whose size or "output" is right for your property. With a boiler, however, size does not mean how big the boiler is, it means how much power it has.

The amount of hot water you get from showers, bathrooms, and sinks and heat from your radiators depends on your boiler's output (measured in kilowatts). The higher the level of output, the better your home will be heated and you can be more certain that the water from your taps will be as hot as you want.

However, you must be careful. You might not get the hot water you want if your boiler output is too low. If it's too high, you'll be paying more than you need to for gas.

With the Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi's output at 40 kW, which types of property would this Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi boiler be most appropriate for?

A Gas Safe boiler installer would recommend that this Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi boiler would be a suitable choice for larger properties including detached homes with 15 or more radiators and two or more bathrooms.

Please remember to consider "flow rates" as well when choosing your new boiler. All combi boilers including the Baxi Duo-tec 40 draw water from the mains.

Each combi boiler has its own flow rate (measured in litres per minute) - this tells you how much water it can heat and distribute to your home’s taps and radiators straight from the mains. This Baxi Duo-tec 40 Combi boiler's flow rate is 16 L/m.

There is no benefit to you in choosing a combi with a high flow rate if your mains pressure is low - save money by buying a boiler whose flow rate is equal to or slightly more than the pressure in your water pipes.

In addition, if you have a lot of radiators and bathrooms in your home or you have a large household that often uses lots of hot water at the same time, like for regular morning and evening showers, a combi boiler may not be suitable.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Baxi Duo-tec 40 dimensions

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 measures 780 mm high and 450 mm wide by a depth of 345 mm.

Is the Baxi Duo-tec 40 a condensing or non-condensing boiler?

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 is a condensing gas boiler - we’d strongly recommend that you choose the very latest condensing model for your home.

Condensing boilers run on either gas or oil and are manufactured specifically to improve energy efficiency. They do this by capturing and recycling the warmth present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation into more usable heat the system can use, meaning they're far more efficient and cost less to run.

How energy efficient is the Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi?

Price and performance are two important issues when choosing a boiler but now, for many people in the UK, so is the environmental impact of how we heat our homes and its effect on climate change.

Around 14% of the greenhouse gases produced in the UK is a result of our central heating systems. Gas boilers are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions in some of our largest cities.

Would choosing the Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi help the environment? Let's see what the statistics suggest.

The energy efficiency rating for a boiler describes the amount of energy it uses and wastes during operation and there are two different ways to measure it.

All boilers manufactured and supplied in the UK must have a SEDBUK rating of “A” subject to a minimum energy efficiency score of 92% or above. Before April 2018, the minimum energy efficiency score was 88% (88/89% = "B" SEDBUK rating, 90%+ = "A" SEDBUK rating).

The Baxi Duo-tec 40 scored an efficiency rating of 92% and a SEDBUK band rating of A.

The Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive is important European legislation that aims to limit energy use and harmful gas emissions during the manufacturing process, when the product is in use, and after it is disposed of.

For the Baxi Duo-tec 40, the ERP Heat rating is "A" and the ERP Water rating is "A".

Does a Baxi Duo-tec 40 combi boiler come with a warranty period?

A parts and labour warranty of 7 years is included with the Baxi Baxi Duo-tec 40 boiler.
