Atag iC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Atag IC 28 - a regular, combi or system boiler?

The Atag IC 28 boiler is a combi boiler you may wish to consider when looking for a new boiler for your house or flat.

A combi boiler could be a better choice than a standard boiler if space is at a premium in your home. Combi boilers draw water directly from the mains supply and heat it instantly, removing the need for a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank.

Water is heated on demand and then distributed directly to your taps and showers. This means that combi boilers use less fuel and so reduce your gas bills.

The main disadvantage to combi boilers is that they can only heat a limited volume of water at any given time. If more than one tap or shower is in use, the hot water supply to both could be restricted and both the water pressure and temperature will drop.

Is the Atag IC 28 combi boiler a suitable choice for my property?

It's best to choose a boiler whose size or "output" is right for your property. With a boiler, however, size does not mean how big the boiler is, it means how much power it has.

The amount of hot water you get from showers, bathrooms, and sinks and heat from your radiators depends on your boiler's output (measured in kilowatts). The higher the level of output, the better your home will be heated and you can be more certain that the water from your taps will be as hot as you want.

However, you must be careful. You might not get the hot water you want if your boiler output is too low. If it's too high, you'll be paying more than you need to for gas.

With the Atag IC 28 combi's output at 23 kW, which types of property would this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler be most appropriate for?

An experienced PlumbProud heating engineer would recommend that the level of output from this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler would make it a suitable installation option for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

As well as the output rate, you need to consider "flow rate" when choosing a combi boiler.

The flow rate describes how much water a combi boiler can draw from the mains, instantly heat, and then send to your radiators. Flow rates are measured in litres per second and this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

The water in your mains pipe also has its own flow rate - normally between 10 and 12l/m in most parts of Britain. This means that, if you choose a combi boiler with a flow rate of 17l/m where local water pressure is 11lm, it won't actually process more water because of the slower flow rate of the mains.

In addition, larger households with more than one bathroom, multiple radiators, and where family members may want to use hot water at the same time (like morning showers) may actually need a boiler with a higher flow rate than either the boiler or the local mains pipe.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

What are the proportions of a Atag IC 28 boiler?

The Atag IC 28 is TBC mm in height, TBC mm in width and TBC mm in depth.

Is the Atag IC 28 a non-condensing or condensing boiler?

We recommend that, if possible, you select one of the very latest condensing gas boilers on the market like the Atag IC 28.

Condensing boilers are better for the environment because they capture and recycle the heat still present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation for re-use, meaning lower greenhouse gas emissions.

They're also a lot cheaper to run meaning that, if you're replacing a very old and inefficient boiler, the savings on your gas bill over 5-10 years add up to more than you pay for the boiler itself.

Is the Atag IC 28 combi considered environmentally friendly?

More and more homeowners are aware of the importance of how we heat our homes and its impact on climate change and other environmental issues.

Central heating produces 14% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. Gas boilers in the larger cities emit dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide.

Is the Atag IC 28 combi an environmentally friendly choice for your home? Let’s have a look at the figures.

All boilers manufactured and installed in the UK are required to have an energy efficiency rating of 92% or above (or a good “A” SEDBUK rating). Before April 2018, when the law changed, the minimum energy efficiency level permissible was 88% (86-90% is a SEDBUK "B" rating and 90%+ is an "A" rating).

A boiler's energy efficiency rating indicates the amount of energy used and wasted during normal operational performance.

Following its assessment, the Atag IC 28 was given an efficiency rating of 94% and a SEDBUK grading of "A".

The ERP (or Energy Related Products Directive) is European legislation which applies to all products that consume energy throughout their lifetime.

Its purpose is to encourage manufacturers to offer products that are kinder to the environment by reducing harmful gas emissions at all stages, from production and end use right through to disposal.

The ERP rating for the Atag IC 28 is "A" for heat and "A" for water.

How long is the warranty period on the Atag IC 28 combi boiler?

A parts and labour warranty of 14 years is included when you purchase the Atag IC 28 boiler through PlumbProud.

Atag iC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Atag IC 28 a standard, combi or system boiler?

You might want to consider the Atag IC 28 for your house or flat if you are looking for a combi boiler.

Traditional boilers need one or more large tanks to work - one to heat and keep water warm for immediate use and the other to store water intended for heating later. Finding space for these large tanks is difficult in British residential property - remember that our houses and flats are among the smallest in the world. This is the problem that combi boilers were designed to solve when they were introduced in the 1970s.

Combi boilers don't need a tank - instead, they instantly heat water drawn from the mains using technology inside the boiler. This hot water is then distributed immediately to your taps or radiators on demand.

The biggest disadvantage to combi boilers is that they have a maximum capacity for heating water, meaning that they work best when only one point within a household wants hot water. For example, if someone is taking a shower and another person uses a hot water tap at the same time, the water pressure, volume and temperature to both points drops.

Would the Atag IC 28 combi be a suitable choice of boiler for my house or flat?

Whether this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler is right for your property depends on its size or what its "output" level is. Size does not mean its physical dimensions, however - it means how powerful it is.

The output rating indicates how much energy a boiler can use in providing you with hot water and heat when you need it from your radiators and taps. The greater the output, the more water it can heat.

It's better to take advice on this from a registered installer because, if your boiler output is too low, your water and radiators might not get as hot as you would like them to be. However, if the output level is too high, you'll end up paying more on your gas bills than you need to.

Which types of property would this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler be appropriate for given its output of 23 kW?

An experienced PlumbProud Gas Safe engineer would almost certainly recommend that this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler would be most suitable for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

In addition to the output rate, you should consider a boiler's "flow rate" (measured in litres per minute) when choosing a combi boiler.

If you have a lot of radiators and bathrooms in your home and members of your household want to use hot water at the same time (like morning or evening showers and baths), you'll need a boiler with a high flow rate. This Atag iC 28 Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

However, it's not that simple. Combis can only draw water from the mains at the speed it's delivered. Homes with higher than average demand for hot water, and particularly those in low mains pressure areas, may find that a combi boiler is not the right answer for them.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead to better serve you and your family.

What is the size of the Atag IC 28?

The Atag IC 28 measures TBC mm tall, TBC mm wide, and TBC mm deep.

Is this Atag boiler condensing or non-condensing?

The Atag IC 28 is a condensing gas boiler - we strongly recommend that you choose one of the latest condensing models if possible.

With a condensing boiler, you save money on your gas bills because your boiler captures and recycles the heat present in the flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation for re-use, meaning they operate far more economically and efficiently.

How energy efficient is the Atag IC 28 combi boiler?

With so many of us worried about the environmental impact of our personal choices, the relationship between how we heat our homes and climate change has become an important issue for many homeowners.

We generate 14% of UK greenhouse gas emissions through centrally heating our domestic properties. Gas boilers are mainly responsible for harmful nitrogen dioxide emissions in larger British cities.

Will installing a Atag IC 28 combi in your home be a positive contribution to the environment? The figures below will tell you more.

Under current UK law, all boilers must achieve a minimum energy efficiency level of 92% (a low to good SEDBUK "A" rating). The minimum level was raised from its previous 88% in April 2018.

Energy efficiency scores are intended to inform consumers of the amount of energy used and wasted when a boiler is in normal operation.

The Atag IC 28 was awarded an efficiency rating of 94% with a SEDBUK band rating of "A".

The Energy Related Products Directive intends to encourage all manufacturers to reduce the harmful gas emissions associated with the products they make, from the manufacturing stage to final disposal, including when they are in active use.

The Atag IC 28 has an ERP rating of "A" for heat and "A" for hot water.

How long is the warranty offered by the manufacturer for the Atag IC 28 boiler?

The Atag IC 28 boiler comes with a parts and labour warranty lasting 14 years.
