Atag iC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Atag IC 28 a combi, system or regular boiler?

The Atag IC 28 boiler is an option you may wish to consider if you're looking for a combi boiler for your house or flat.

Traditional boilers have one or more large tanks in which they store either heated water or water to be heated later. Manufacturers originally introduced combi boilers to the market in the 1970s to enable homeowners to save space - UK residential properties are among the smallest in the Western world.

Combi boilers don't need these tanks because they draw water directly from the mains and instantly heat it on demand thanks to the technology inside the boiler. Combi boilers then distribute this hot water to your home’s taps and radiators when needed.

The most significant disadvantage of combi boilers is that they are not ideal in larger homes where multiple people might want hot water at the same time – for example, if someone is having a shower while another wants to wash dishes in the kitchen. This is because combi boilers have a maximum volume of water that they can heat. When two people want hot water at the same time, the water temperature, pressure and volume delivered to both points drop.

Is a Atag IC 28 combi the right boiler for my house or flat?

To determine that, we need to consider the size of the boiler. Size doesn't mean how big it is - it means how big its "output" is.

Boiler output is measured in kilowatts and tells you how much power a boiler can use to heat the water your taps, showers and radiators need. The higher the output, the more power it has.

When choosing a boiler, you should choose one that can cope with the peak demand for hot water in your home and not just your typical usage.

If its output is too low, sometimes your hot water will not be hot enough, but if your boiler's output is too high for your needs, your gas bills will go up and not down.

The output of the Atag IC 28 combi is 23 kW, so which types of property would this Atag iC 28 Combi boiler be an appropriate choice for?

To most experienced Gas Safe engineers, the Atag IC 28 combi IC would be most suitable for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

You should also consider a combi boiler's "flow rate" when making your choice.

The flow rate indicates how much water it can take from the mains supply at any one time (measured in litres per minute), which it then heats and distributes to different points in your home like your bathroom, kitchen and radiators. This Atag iC 28 Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

Combi boilers have no storage tanks like system or heat only boilers. This means that if the water pressure where you live is low, there's no benefit in spending money on a combi with a high flow rate because a high flow rate doesn't mean it can draw any more water from the mains.

In addition, there might be lots of people in your household who want to use hot water at the same time while also having the central heating on. Given that average mains pressure in the UK is between 10 and 12 litres per second and a power shower usually requires about 12 litres of water per minute, a combi boiler might not be the right choice for you and your family.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

The size of the Atag IC 28

The measurements of the Atag IC 28 are TBC mm by TBC mm by TBC mm.

Is the Atag IC 28 a non-condensing or condensing boiler?

Condensing gas boilers like the Atag IC 28 are environmentally friendlier and cheaper to run so, if possible, we strongly recommend that you choose this or one of the very latest models.

Condensing boilers are much more efficient and economical to run because they contain a secondary heat exchanger that captures and recycles the warmth still present in the flue exhaust gases and the water vapour condensation for re-use, meaning that they use less gas to run.

Is the Atag IC 28 combi a good choice for the environment?

Price and performance are two important issues when choosing a boiler but now, for many people in the UK, so is the environmental impact of how we heat our homes and its effect on climate change.

In Britain's bigger cities, gas boilers, in particular, are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions. Overall, 14% of all of the UK’s greenhouse gas production comes from heating our homes.

Will installing a Atag IC 28 combi in your home be a positive contribution to the environment? The figures below will tell you more.

All boilers manufactured and installed in the UK are required by law to have an energy efficiency rating of at least 92%, equivalent to a good “A” rating on the SEDBUK scale. Before this, the minimum was 88% (ratings of 88% and 89% are equivalent to a high “B” SEDBUK rating and anything 90% or higher is an "A" rating).

A boiler's energy efficiency rating is designed to let you know how much energy is used and wasted during normal functioning.

The Atag IC 28 was given an efficiency rating of 94% and a band rating of "A".

The Energy Related Products (ERP) directive is Europe-wide legislation designed to reduce harmful gas emissions at all points of a product's life cycle - from the production process to its actual end use, right through to final disposal.

The Atag IC 28 has a rating of "A" for heat and "A" for water.

Atag iC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Atag IC 28 - a system boiler, regular boiler or combi boiler?

Looking for a gas combi boiler for your flat or house? Then the Atag IC 28 may be an option you should consider.

Traditionally, boilers needed one or more large tanks installed in your property to store their heated water or water that was to be heated later. These tanks were often too large to be practical for most homes so the combi boiler was introduced to Britain in the 1970s by manufacturers to help homeowners overcome this issue.

Instead of using tanks as storage, a combi boiler heats water on demand. It draws water from the mains and heats it instantly on demand before distributing it to wherever it is needed in a property, be it your taps or radiators.

Unfortunately, combi boilers have one main disadvantage for larger properties or larger households. Because they have a maximum volume of water that can be heated on demand at any given time, water pressure, volume and temperature will drop if, for example, someone is taking a shower and another person in your home wants to use a hot water tap at the same time.

Is the Atag IC 28 combi boiler suitable for my house or apartment?

You should make sure that the boiler you install in your property is the right "size". And size doesn't mean its physical dimensions, size means how much power it has - the "output".

Your boiler should be able to cope with peak hot water demand in your property and not just your average hot water usage. The output rate of a boiler is measured in kilowatts and tells you how much power a boiler can use to provide hot water to your taps, showers and radiators.

If the output of your boiler is too low, there will often be times when your water isn't as hot as you want. But if your boiler output is too high, it will be more costly to run (often unnecessarily).

The output of the Atag IC 28 combi boiler is 23 kW kilowatts. Which types of property would this be appropriate for?

A PlumbProud Gas Safe engineer would recommend that the most suitable type of property for a Atag IC 28 combi would be smaller homes and apartments containing up to 10 radiators and providing hot water for one bathroom.

Homeowners considering fitting a combi boiler to their home need to consider flow rates as well as output rates.

The flow rate is a measurement of the volume of water a combi can instantly heat and send to the taps and radiators around your home. The higher the likely demand for hot water in your home, the higher your combi's flow rate should be. This Atag iC 28 Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

Unlike heat only or system boilers, combi boilers don't store hot water in a tank for later use - instead, they draw it directly from the mains. This means that the volume of water your boiler can actually process is constrained by the flow rate of water in the mains pipe.

So, if you choose a combi boiler with a 15l/m flow rate but the flow rate in your mains pipe is 12l/m, the combi boiler's working flow rate is also 12l/m.

Combi boilers are also not always the correct choice for homes with multiple bathrooms, a high number of radiators, or where more than one family member will want to use hot water at the same time.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

What is the size of the Atag IC 28?

The Atag IC 28 is TBC mm in height, TBC mm in width and TBC mm in depth.

Is the Atag IC 28 a condensing or non-condensing boiler?

We recommend that you select a condensing boiler like the Atag IC gas Atag IC 28 for your home if possible because of the environmental benefits and the money you'll save on your gas bills.

Condensing boilers are much more energy-efficient than older, non-condensing models as they capture and recycle the heat still present in the water vapour condensation and flue exhaust gases that your boiler creates when burning gas for reuse.

How environmentally friendly is the Atag IC 28 combi?

With environmental issues in the spotlight, more and more homeowners are becoming concerned about how they heat their homes and how much they're contributing towards combatting climate change.

Central heating accounts for 14% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. In larger British cities, gas boilers emit dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide into the atmosphere.

Is the Atag IC 28 combi boiler an environmentally friendly choice for your home? Here’s what the figures say.

Boilers manufactured after April 2018 in the UK must achieve an "A" on the SEDBUK grading system as well as score a minimum of 92% on a separate energy efficiency test. Prior to that, the minimum was 88% - boilers rated at 88% and 89% were given a “B” rating (90% and higher were given an "A").

An energy efficiency rating describes how much energy the boiler uses and how much it wastes when in use.

The Atag IC 28 was awarded an efficiency rating of 94% with a SEDBUK grading of "A".

The Energy Related Products Directive (ERP) came into force in 2015. This legislation was introduced to encourage manufacturers to create more energy-efficient products and it covers all products that consume energy during their lifetimes, including energy used during production and at the point of disposal.

ERP ratings of "A" for heat and "A" for water were assigned when testing the Atag IC 28.

Is this Atag IC 28 combi covered by a warranty?

The Atag IC 28 boiler offers a parts and labour warranty of 14 years.
