Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Alpha E-TEC 28 - a combi boiler, system boiler or regular boiler?

Looking for a gas combi boiler for your flat or house? Then the Alpha E-TEC 28 may be an option you should consider.

In many properties, combi boilers are more suitable than traditional types of boiler. Combi boilers heat water instantly on demand, which they draw directly from the mains supply, removing the need for storage tanks that can take up valuable space in your home.

A combi boiler is often the right choice for a smaller property, particularly if your home doesn't have a useable loft. As water is heated and delivered immediately rather than being kept warm for hours in an immersion tank, combi boilers reduce gas usage, thereby minimising your heating costs.

The main disadvantage of combi boilers is that they can only heat a certain amount of water at any one time. This means that, if two people are using different taps or showers within your home at the same time, the flow of heated water to each will be reduced, as will the water pressure and temperature.

Is a Alpha E-TEC 28 combi boiler right for my house or apartment?

Selecting the right boiler for your home means choosing a boiler that is the right size. And, by size, we don't mean how big it is, we mean how powerful it is - the "output".

Your boiler’s output is a measurement of the power it has available to it to heat the water you need for your radiators or for when you turn on a tap, bath or shower. A higher output rate means it has more power and can heat more water.

It's important to choose an output that matches the demand for water in your home because if your boiler has too low an output, you'll often find only lukewarm water comes out of your taps or heats your radiators. If it’s too high, you’ll be paying more for your gas than you need to.

The Alpha E-TEC 28 combi has an output of 26 kW, so which types of property would this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler be appropriate for?

An experienced Gas Safe engineer would be likely to recommend that this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler is capable of providing heating and hot water to up to 10 radiators and one bathroom and would therefore be most suitable for smaller homes and apartments.

With combi boilers like the Alpha E-TEC 28, you need to take the flow rate into account as well as the output rate.

Combi boilers draw water from the mains and then instantly heat that water and send it to wherever in your home it's needed. Flow rates, measured in litres per minute, are subject to the mains water pressure in your area. So, for example, if the local mains water pressure is 11 litres per minute and the flow rate of your boiler is 14 litres per minute, the boiler will not be able to process more than 11 litres per minute. The flow rate of this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler is 12 L/m.

If you live in a home with lots of radiators or bathrooms where many people want to use hot water at the same time, a combi boiler may not be able to cope. For reference, a power shower uses about 10 litres of water per minute. If two people want showers at the same time or one person wants a shower and the other hot water from a tap in the kitchen, your boiler may not have a large enough flow rate even if the local mains water pressure is high.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Making space for the Alpha E-TEC 28

Alpha’s E-TEC 28 is TBC mm tall, TBC mm wide, and TBC mm deep.

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 non-condensing or condensing?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 is a condensing gas boiler - we strongly suggest that you choose either this model or a recently released model if at all possible.

A condensing boiler captures and recycles the warmth present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation created by the burning of gas to warm up the water coming back into your boiler - for example, from your radiators.

Condensing boilers cost less to run (lower gas bills) and are better for the environment.

How does the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi boiler rate environmentally?

With more and more people concerned about climate change, how we heat our homes and the damage it does to the environment is increasingly being questioned by British homeowners.

As much as 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas production derives from our domestic central heating systems. Gas boilers are responsible for dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions in Britain's largest cities.

Do the available figures suggest that installing the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi in your property would be an environmentally friendly choice?

Boilers manufactured and installed in the UK are assigned energy efficiency ratings following testing to an agreed set of standards. These scores indicate how much energy the boiler uses and how much goes to waste when it's in operation.

By law, boilers must achieve a SEDBUK rating of "A" subject to achieving a minimum of 92% energy efficiency. Prior to April 2018, the minimum was 88% (88% and 89% on the SEDBUK are graded "B" and 90% and above is graded "A").

The Alpha E-TEC 28 was awarded an efficiency rating of 93% with a SEDBUK band rating of "A".

The ERP (or Energy Related Products Directive) is European legislation which applies to all products that consume energy throughout their lifetime.

Its purpose is to encourage manufacturers to offer products that are kinder to the environment by reducing harmful gas emissions at all stages, from production and end use right through to disposal.

The ERP rating for the Alpha E-TEC 28 is "A" for heat and "A" for water.

Will I be covered if the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi breaks down?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 boiler comes with a 7 year warranty for parts and labour.

Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 a combi, system or regular boiler?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 boiler is a combi boiler you may wish to consider when looking for a new boiler for your house or flat.

Combi boilers provide hot water or heating for your home on demand. You just need to turn the tap to get hot water or switch on the radiator and you’ll feel your home warm up within minutes.

In contrast, traditional boilers required either one or two large storage tanks to work - one to heat and keep water warm and the other to hold cold water for later heating. If the immersion tank was empty, it wasn’t uncommon to wait up to an hour for enough hot water to fill a bath, for example.

Combi boilers draw cold water from the mains and then heat it instantly whenever it's needed, all from one small unit.

The one disadvantage to combi boilers is that, if more than one point is in use at any one time (for example, if someone is taking a shower and another person turns on a hot water tap elsewhere in the property), water pressure, temperature and volume drop to both points.

Is a Alpha E-TEC 28 combi the right boiler for my house or flat?

It's best to choose a boiler whose size or "output" is right for your property. With boilers, however, size does not mean how big a boiler is, it means how much power it has.

A boiler’s output indicates the amount of power it can use when heating the water which it then sends to your taps and radiators. The higher the output rate, the more water it can heat.

If a boiler’s output is too low, there will be times when your hot water might not be as hot as you want it to be. If it is too high, you’ll likely be paying more than you need to for your gas.

Measured in kilowatts, the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi's output level is 26 kW, so which types of property would this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler be an appropriate choice for?

An experienced Gas Safe engineer would be likely to recommend that this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler is capable of providing heating and hot water to up to 10 radiators and one bathroom and would therefore be most suitable for smaller homes and apartments.

With combi boilers, you need to consider the flow rate as well as the output rate. The flow rate (shown in litres per minute) measures how much water your boiler can draw from the mains which it then instantly heats and distributes to your taps and radiators.

However, a high flow rate is of little to no value if your local water pressure is low. If your local mains water pressure is 10l/m and your flow rate is 12l/m, your boiler will only be able to process 10l/m.

If you live in an area with high water pressure but your household has multiple bathrooms and/or radiators and many members of your household want to use hot water at the same time (like morning or evening baths or showers), it's unlikely that you'll be able to find a combi with a high enough flow rate.

As an indication, a power shower needs about 10 litres of water per minute, whereas the flow rate of this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler is 12 L/ml/m.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Making space for the Alpha E-TEC 28

The Alpha E-TEC 28 is TBC mm high by TBC mm wide by TBC mm deep.

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 non-condensing or condensing?

Condensing boilers convert the warmth present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation into heat which they then recycle to increase the temperature of the colder water returning to your system.

We recommend that homeowners choose a condensing boiler like the Alpha E-TEC 28 for this reason - the more recent your model the better because the technology improves every year.

You'll benefit from lower quarterly gas bills and condensing boilers are also much more environmentally friendly.

What energy efficiency ratings have been awarded to the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi?

As more of us become concerned by the effects of climate change, the damage we do to the environment by heating our homes has emerged as an important issue for many homeowners.

Nitrogen dioxide emissions in Britain's largest cities are at dangerous levels and this has been caused by gas boilers. In fact, 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gases are produced by central heating.

Would choosing a Alpha E-TEC 28 combi help the environment? Let’s see what the performance figures suggest.

All boilers manufactured and supplied in the UK are assigned two energy efficiency ratings. By law, they must achieve a SEDBUK "A" rating subject to a minimum efficiency level of 92%. Prior to that, the minimum was 88% (88% and 89% are equivalent to a SEDBUK "B" grade and 90% and above an "A" grade).

The ratings awarded to the Alpha E-TEC 28 are 93% with a SEDBUK rating of "A".

The Energy Related Products Directive (ERP) came into force in 2015. This legislation was introduced to encourage manufacturers to create more energy-efficient products and it covers all products that consume energy during their lifetimes, including energy used during production and at the point of disposal.

ERP ratings of "A" for heat and "A" for water were assigned when testing the Alpha E-TEC 28.

Is this Alpha E-TEC 28 combi covered by a warranty?

The parts and labour warranty on the Alpha E-TEC 28 lasts for 7 years.
