Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

What type of boiler is the Alpha E-TEC 28 - regular, system or combi?

You may wish to consider installing the Alpha E-TEC 28 if you are looking for a combi boiler for your house or flat.

A combi boiler could be a better choice than a standard boiler if space is at a premium in your home. Combi boilers draw water directly from the mains supply and heat it instantly, removing the need for a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank.

Water is heated on demand and then distributed directly to your taps and showers. This means that combi boilers use less fuel and so reduce your gas bills.

The main disadvantage to combi boilers is that they can only heat a limited volume of water at any given time. If more than one tap or shower is in use, the hot water supply to both could be restricted and both the water pressure and temperature will drop.

Should I install a Alpha E-TEC 28 combi boiler in my house or flat?

Whether this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler is right for where you live depends on its size or "output" level. Size does not mean its physical dimensions - it means how powerful it is.

The output level of a boiler tells you how much power it has to heat the water coming from your taps and warming up your radiators. The higher the output level, the greater the volume of water it can heat up.

If the output (measured in kilowatts) is too high, you'll pay higher gas bills and your water will be piping hot. Too low and the water coming out of your taps and being fed into your radiators will often be lukewarm.

The Alpha E-TEC 28 combi outputs at a maximum of 26 kW, so which types of property would this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler be appropriate for?

An experienced boiler engineer would recommend that this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler would be a suitable installation choice for smaller homes and apartments with up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

With combi boilers, you need to consider the flow rate as well as the output rate. The flow rate (shown in litres per minute) measures how much water your boiler can draw from the mains which it then instantly heats and distributes to your taps and radiators.

However, a high flow rate is of little to no value if your local water pressure is low. If your local mains water pressure is 10l/m and your flow rate is 12l/m, your boiler will only be able to process 10l/m.

If you live in an area with high water pressure but your household has multiple bathrooms and/or radiators and many members of your household want to use hot water at the same time (like morning or evening baths or showers), it's unlikely that you'll be able to find a combi with a high enough flow rate.

As an indication, a power shower needs about 10 litres of water per minute, whereas the flow rate of this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler is 12 L/ml/m.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

Making space for the Alpha E-TEC 28

The Alpha E-TEC 28 is TBC mm tall, TBC mm wide, and TBC mm deep.

Is this Alpha boiler condensing or non-condensing?

Condensing gas boilers like the Alpha E-TEC 28 are environmentally friendlier and cheaper to run so, if possible, we strongly recommend that you choose this or one of the very latest models.

Condensing boilers are much more efficient and economical to run because they contain a secondary heat exchanger that captures and recycles the warmth still present in the flue exhaust gases and the water vapour condensation for re-use, meaning that they use less gas to run.

How does the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi rate environmentally?

How we heat our homes and the damage we might be doing to the environment as a result has become an important point of concern to many homeowners worried about climate change.

Approximately 14% of the UK's greenhouse gas production is caused by our central heating systems. The gas boilers in larger urban areas of Britain are mainly responsible for emissions of toxic nitrogen dioxide.

Will choosing to install a Alpha E-TEC 28 combi in your home help the environment? Let's review the figures.

An energy efficiency rating of 92% or above is a legal requirement for all boilers manufactured and installed in the UK today. 92% is equivalent to a low-to-middle "A" grade on the "Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers" (SEDBUK) scale.

Energy efficiency measures how much energy a boiler uses and wastes in the course of its normal operation. The lower the waste, the lower your gas bills.

The Alpha E-TEC 28 was awarded an efficiency rating of "93%", equivalent to a "A" rating on the SEDBUK system.

In 2015, the Energy Related Products Directive (ERP) came into force. The legislation applies to all products that consume energy in production, during their active life, and at the point of final disposal.

The ERP was introduced to incentivise manufacturers to create products that emitted fewer harmful gases with the larger aim of protecting the wider environment.

The Alpha E-TEC 28 has been awarded an ERP rating of "A" for heat and "A" for water.

What warranty does the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi boiler come with?

Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi Gas boiler frequently asked questions

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 a standard, combi or system boiler?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 boiler is a combi boiler you may wish to consider when looking for a new boiler for your house or flat.

Combi boilers are excellent for providing hot water and heat for your radiators just when you need it. When you have a combi boiler installed in your home, you just turn on the tap and the hot water for your bath, shower, washing dishes and other activities is there when you need it. It also provides the heat you need to keep your radiators warm.

A combi boiler heats the cold water passing through it, which it draws from the mains. This newly heated water can then be distributed to whichever hot tap or radiator needs it.

In the past, boilers needed at least one storage tank to hold water that was either already heated or would be heated later. Sometimes, you'd have to wait for hot water because there was none left. In addition, storage tanks took up a lot of space and most UK homes are pretty small.

The main disadvantage to combi boilers is that they can only heat a certain amount of water at any one time, meaning the pressure, volume and temperature of water will decrease if more than one tap is on at the same time or if both the shower and washing machine are on together.

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi boiler from the E-TEC range a suitable choice for my house or flat?

It's best to choose a boiler whose size or "output" is right for your property. With boilers, however, size does not mean how big a boiler is, it means how much power it has.

A boiler’s output indicates the amount of power it can use when heating the water which it then sends to your taps and radiators. The higher the output rate, the more water it can heat.

If a boiler’s output is too low, there will be times when your hot water might not be as hot as you want it to be. If it is too high, you’ll likely be paying more than you need to for your gas.

Measured in kilowatts, the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi's output level is 26 kW, so which types of property would this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler be an appropriate choice for?

A Gas Safe boiler installer would recommend that this Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler would provide adequate heating and hot water for smaller homes and apartments with up to up to 10 radiators and one bathroom.

Please remember too that all combi boilers draw water from the mains - they have no storage tanks. Combis heat the water from the mains on demand and then send it to wherever it's needed in the house, like a radiator, a bathroom or a kitchen.

The speed at which it can do this is called the "flow rate", which is measured in litres per minute. If you have a lot of radiators and bathrooms in your home and multiple people are regularly trying to use the hot water at one time, such as in the morning or evening, you'll need a combi with a high flow rate. This Alpha E-TEC 28 Combi boiler's flow rate is 12 L/m.

However, it's not that simple. Combis can only draw water from the mains at the speed it's delivered. If the flow rate of the local water supply is 11l/m, you shouldn't purchase a boiler with a flow rate of 17l/m because it will never be able to use that extra capacity.

When our engineer comes out to quote you, they may recommend that you choose a heat only boiler or system boiler instead if your family's demand for hot water is higher than normal.

What dimensions does a Alpha E-TEC 28 have?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 is TBC mm tall, TBC mm wide, and TBC mm deep.

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 a non-condensing or condensing boiler?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 is a condensing gas boiler - we strongly suggest that you choose either this model or a recently released model if at all possible.

A condensing boiler captures and recycles the warmth present in flue exhaust gases and water vapour condensation created by the burning of gas to warm up the water coming back into your boiler - for example, from your radiators.

Condensing boilers cost less to run (lower gas bills) and are better for the environment.

Is the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi considered environmentally friendly?

With growing concern among the public about accelerating climate change, how we heat our homes and the impact this has on the environment has become a major topic of concern for many homeowners.

Central heating systems are responsible for 14% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. You may also be aware that the gas boilers we use emit dangerous nitrogen dioxide in large volumes in the bigger British cities.

Let's take a closer look at whether installing a Alpha E-TEC 28 combi would be a good choice for the environment.

All boilers manufactured after April 2018 in the UK must be rated as an “A” on the SEDBUK grading system, subject to a minimum energy efficiency rating of 92% or above. Before that, the minimum rate was 88% - boilers with an energy efficiency of 88% or 89% were given a “B” rating. Boilers scoring 90% or more were given an "A" rating.

The energy efficiency rating for a boiler describes the amount of energy it uses and how much goes to waste in operation.

The Alpha E-TEC 28 has an efficiency rating of 93% with a SEDBUK grade of "A".

The ERP (or Energy Related Products Directive) is European legislation affecting products that consume energy throughout their lifetime.

The aim is to encourage companies to create environmentally friendlier products that reduce harmful gas emissions during manufacturing and when in use by the end client, right through to their eventual disposal.

In the case of the Alpha E-TEC 28, the ERP rating is "A" for heat and "A" for hot water production.

Am I covered if the Alpha E-TEC 28 combi boiler breaks down?

The Alpha E-TEC 28 boiler has a warranty covering parts and labour costs for up to 7 years after installation.
